New Study Highlights Cheerleading Safety + Injury Trends

๐Ÿ“ฐ The news: A new peer-reviewed study published in Frontiers in Public Health (July 2025) offers important insights into injury patterns in cheerleading across the U.S. from 2010 to 2019.

The study reviewed national injury data to help athletes, coaches, and parents better understand evolving safety risks in the sport.

Key findings include:

  • Overall injury rates decreased by an average of 15.4% per year from 2010 to 2019.
  • Concussions increased significantly, rising by an average of 44.9% per year during the same period.
  • Younger athletes (ages 5โ€“11) had a higher rate of moderate-to-severe injuries (46.5%) compared to athletes aged 12โ€“19 (28.2%).
  • Stunt-related activities accounted for the largest proportion of injuries (53.2%), particularly during basket tosses and pyramids.
  • Following the ban on basket tosses on hard surfaces (2006-2007), the rate of catastrophic injuries dropped from 1.55 to 0.40 per million participants.

๐ŸŒŸ Why it matters: The study highlights the importance of improving cheerleading safety through age-appropriate training, safe practice environments, and up-to-date safety rules. It shows that policy changes, like banning baskets on hard surfaces, can reduce serious injuries.

๐Ÿ“… Whatโ€™s next: The authors also note a lack of global injury data, calling for better reporting systems worldwide to help guide safety efforts beyond the U.S.
