Cheerleading Injury Rates Now Lower Than Many Sports
A 2023β2024 study found cheerleading placed 17th out of 20 sports in injury rate, with just 1.05 injuries per 1,000 athletic exposures - below the average (2.03) across all sports.
Catastrophic injuries fell 85% in the last decade, with no fatal or permanently disabling injuries reported in the past two years. This data makes cheer statistically safer than many other sports - like soccer, basketball, volleyball, and softball.
π Why it matters: Well, we don't really need to explain why it matters... However, injury rates have dropped thanks to things like rule changes, coach certifications, and injury reporting systems. It's simply good news for everyone involved in the sport!
π Whatβs next: USA Cheer confirmed they will keep monitoring data, focusing on things like fatigue management and skill progression in practices.
